Colachel: Scene of an Indian Victory
Colachel is a small town located near the southern tip of the Indian Peninsula. It is in the state of Tamil Nadu. Located near the tip of the peninsula, one can view Indian Ocean, Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea from near this town. Colachel has a natural harbor in the west coast in the Arabian Sea.
Colachel has a great historical importance, Vasco-da-Gama has noted about this place as ‘Colachi’.
This was the location of victory of an Indian ruler over the Dutch Army. In Colachel, King Marthanda Varma defeated the Dutch army in 1751. A victory pillar was erected then near the beach in commemoration of this victory.
The places to visit in Colachel include the Nagaraja temple which also has the images of lord Siva and Ananatha Krishna enshrined. St. Xavier Church located here dates back to about 15th century and is dedicated to St. Francis Xavier.
The Pechipparai Dam is a favored picnic spot of tourists, the facilities for boating trips in the beautiful waters of the dam is also provided. Udayagiri Fort is another place to visit which was built by King Marthanda Varma in the 18th century.
Thirparappu Water Falls is very picturesque and also has an ancient Mahadevar Temple which is a must-see for a visitor
Thiruvattar located at a distance of about 40 kilo meters from Colachel has beautiful mural paintings on the walls and has a fine collection of specimens of temple art and architecture.
