Padmanabhapuram: Traditional and Majestic
Padmanabhapuram is a historical town located in the Kanyakumari District of Tamil Nadu, in southern India. Padmanabhapuram is at a distance of about 15 kilo meters from the town of Nagercoil and 50 kilometers from Thiruvananthapuram, capital of the state of Kerala.
To reach the Padmanabhapuram via road is easy as the National Highway No.47, passes through the town. . The nearest railway station is Eranial located at about a distance of 3 km from the town.
The area of the present town of Padmanabhapuram is of great historical importance, and has known history since the Sangham Age, about 5th Century AD. During these ages, the town was an important place of administration. By about 16th century, the town was turned as the capital of the then ruling King Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma and renamed Padmanabhapuram. By the end of the 18th century, the rulers were forced to shift the capital to the town of Thiruvananthapuram due to the political pressures of the Dutch and English traders. For about two and half centuries, the town of Padmanabhapuram was the seat of imperial power, center of trade and commerce, and the heart of culture, art and literature.
Nowadays, tourists visit this town to view the magnificent palace of the former Maharaja and the various temples that flaunt beautiful sculptures. Ramaswamy temple and Neelakantasami temple are two such important locations. Another important temple is Temple is “Kumarakoil” where the deity of worship is Murugan. The town also boasts of a renowned mosque named Salik peer Mohammed Sahib Darga.
