Kovalam is the most well known beaches of Kerala, India. It is located ata distance of about 13 kilo meters from the town of Trivandrum. The name Kovalam is calimed to been derived from a word meaning a 'grove of coconut trees'. It is also said that it was named after a certain weed that covered the area called Koval in the local dialect.
Kovalam was first brought into the public eye as a tourist spot as early as 1930s during the British rule of India. The beaches are ideal for swimming also as the sea here is shallow for hundreds of meters. The beaches are lined with coconut palm covered areas giving a charming green look to the beach. Kovalam has three distinct beaches which are crescent shaped with rocky outcroppings separating them. The prevalent beach has a light house which is 35 meters high and is called the Light House Beach. Another beach called the Hawah Beach was the first topless beach in India. It was named Hawah (local dialect for the biblical Eve) beach because of large number of topless European women sun bathing on the beach. But nowadays, topless bathing is banned in public beaches. The third beach at the northern tip is called Samudra Beach. The beach has a black color due to the presence of ilmenite and thorazite in the sands. Availability of comfortable resorts and Ayurvedic salons that offer recuperation and regeneration treatments make the beach highly sort after by tourists mainly from Europe and Israel. |
