Nagarhole: Meet Tigers in the Wild
Nagarhole National Park located in the state of Karnataka has an affluent cover of green forest, small rivulets, valleys, and beautiful waterfalls. 'Naga' means snakes in the local dialect, and 'hole' means streams; both abundant in the national park. It is situated at a distance of 94 kilometers from the city of Mysore. Original human inhabitants of this forest are now forced to find new areas for settlement as the region is now restricted to their entry under law for protection of wild animals.
The park which has a width of more than 643 square kilo meters is the home of many protected species of wild life like the tiger. This area together with the neighboring the western Ghats is considered to be selected as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO's World Heritage Committee.
The vegetation of the national park is mainly deciduous forest in the south and dry evergreen forest in the eastern areas. The national park of Nagarhole has a large population of both predators like tigers, leopards, wild dogs, and sloth bears and of herbivorous animals like elephants, gaur, spotted deer, four-horned antelope, mouse deer and wild boar forming a healthy predator-prey ratio.
The climate of the area is typically tropical with very hot summers and pleasantly warm winters. The monsoons reach here in about June and it rains till September. While planning a trip to the region it should be kept in mind that the national park is closed during the rainy season and during the mating season of the animals.
