Anamudi: Tallest Peak of South India
Anamudi located in the state of Kerala is the tallest peak of Southern India. The literal meaning of the name Anamudi is the "forehead of Elephant" and being the tallest peak of the locality it is evident why it was named so.
Situated on the Western Ghats, anamude has an approximate elevation of 2,695 meters. This is the highest peak of India outside the relatively younger Himalayan ranges. Being located in the Deccan plateau, of the older regions of the Indian Peninsula, the peak is not very steep nor has ravines.
The town nearest to Anamudi is Munnar at a distance of about 13 kilo meters. Located in the protected area of Eravikulam National Park, the hills are home for many rare species of wild animals like Asian Elephants, Gaur, Bengal tigers, and Nilgiri tahr, which are all protected species. the area boasts of the largest population of Asiatic elephants living in the wild.
To reach the top of the peak, it is rather easy to climb up the grass slopes on either the south or north sides. The eastern and western faces of the peak are hillier with steeper rock faces. The trek up the mountain will not be too difficult and even families with children can make a trip of adventure to the peak of Anamudi.
The evergreen forest surrounding the peak is composed of mainly bamboos and teak which grow abundantly. It is from these forests, the major rivers which irrigate southern India, like Vaigai, Thamirabarani and Periyar, originates.
