Alappuzha: Venice of the East
Alappuzha or Alleppey is named the Venice of the east because of the numerous canals and water ways that link the town. This is the most well known tourist spot of Kerala located in south India. The beautiful backwaters of Alappuzha have always attracted bountiful tourists to the state.
With green paddy fields that sway in the breeze spreading to the horizon, Alappuzha is a natural paradise. Picturesque coconut groves, small streams, canals and ponds filed with water lilies make Alappuzha a must see destination for travelers.
Many parts of Alappuzha is equivalent or even below sea level and the houses and paddy fields are built on man-made lands secured through dams that prevent sea water from entering the human habitats during high tides. Most of the houses are located on remote man-made islands from which the most popular mode of transport is using small boats. Like owning a family car, every home in Alappuzha has a family boat for traveling.
Many migratory birds come to Alappuzha during certain months. Alappuzha is also rich in different varieties of sea food.
Major attraction if this place is the availability of house boats. House boats were previously used to transport huge quantities of rice and supplies to the town. Nowadays, house boats are arranged to have all modern amenities in which families can spend day and night on the back waters.
On a more exciting front, Alappuzha can also be explored using smaller boats like pedal boats or speed boats which are available.
