Poovar: Where Flowers Flow Down Streams
The sun kissed golden beaches of Poovar have always attracted tourists in a large number. Poovar is a beautiful place where the Arabian Sea, backwaters and river meet up.
The coastal village of Poovar is located in Trivandrum district of Kerala, India. The village is near the inter-state border of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. This beach is located at about 12 Kilo meters away from the beach of Kovalam
The Neyyar River which is 56 kilo meters long flows into the Arabian Sea near Poovar. Through Poovar runs an estuary of the Neyyar River connecting it to the sea during high tides. Poovar was named so after the numerous red flowers ('Poov' in the local language) those fall into the river Neyyar near the beach.
Poovar is located near Vizhinjam, which is a natural harbor. To reach Poovar by air, the nearest airport is Trivandrum International Airport, located at a distance of 20 kilo meters. The nearest Railway Stations are Trivandrum Central located at a distance of 22 kilo meters and Nemom located at a distance of 12 kilo meters
Historically, Poovar was a center used to trade sandal wood, timber, ivory and spices such as pepper. It is even believed that King Solomon's ships used to come to Poovar for trading during biblical times. Poovar also has a muslim mosque which is 1,400 year old.
Presence of some pleasant tourist resorts adds to the charm and comfort of the Poovar beach. The beach here is known for its cleanliness also.
