Payyoli: Beach for Nature lovers
Payyoli is a village on the Malabar Coast of Kozhikode district in the South Indian state of Kerala. It is located at a distance of 35 kilo meters from the town of Kozhikode.
Beautiful sunny beaches of Payyoli are quiet and tourists do not swarm the place. Lined with green coconut palms, the beaches are gorgeous. The beach here is very shallow and so is ideal for swimming.
To reach Payyoli beach by air, the nearest airport is the Calicut International Airport, Karippur. The nearest railway station to reach the beach is the Payyoli railway station.
Another attraction of the Payyoli beach is the presence of the great Kunhali Marakkar museum situated at about 3 kilo meters away from Payyoli in the place of Irinkal. Kunjali Marakkar was a historic person well known as a hero of the Indian freedom struggle against the British rule.
Payyoli is famous in the sports field, as the birth place of the Indian sports legend Olympian P. T. Usha. She is even nick named 'Payyoli Express' as she started her athletic career with her daily practice run on the Payyoli beach.
Payyoli beach is also known for its environmental conservative activities. A certain breed of endangered sea turtles uses this beach as their breeding ground and bury their eggs in the sands of the beach. Special care is given by the local people on the beach during the months of November and December to ensure safe hatching and to make the new born turtles reach the sea.
