Default Protect Your Child from Diabetes

Diabetes is a syndrome that occurs due to hereditary and environmental causes resulting in high blood sugar levels.

Children are mostly affected by Type I Diabetes or juvenile diabetes, which is usually triggered by environmental causes.

But unfortunately, children are being diagnosed by type II or late onset adult diabetes as well.

Type I Diabetes: occurs when pancreas does not produce enough insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps to utilize sugar in your body.

This type of diabetes can be controlled by insulin injection.

3-5 % children these days are suffering from diabetes. This percentage is increasing constantly. Looking at the modern world, children these days are more and more reliant on junk food. They prefer taking chips to school and enjoy eating burgers and pizzas over weekends. This should be replaced by more healthy eating habits.

Hence you must have the knowledge of the disease Diabetes Mellitus and the measures that can be taken to protect your child from it, because disturbances in blood sugar level may affect growth, development and puberty in children.

Understanding your child:

A child may not understand what's wrong with him. As a parent you should be vigilant enough and observe your child. If you find the following symptoms in your child, it might be that your child is suffering from diabetes. Please visit a doctor as soon as possible to exclude this syndrome.

- Passing urine more often, bed wetting and frequent thirst
- If your child is always hungry and eats more than usual.
- If your child looses weight despite of increased diet.
- Feeling tired all the time.
- Abdominal pain, nausea and dehydration.
- If your child is prone to respiratory infections and other infections.
- If the breath is sweet smelling and the tongue and skin is dry.
- If the wound doesn't heal fast.
- If your child complains of blurred vision.
- The child may feel drowsy and may go into semi/unconscious state in advanced stages.

When you visit your doctor, a simple blood test and a urine test will determine if your child has diabetes.

How to manage the disease? Your role in doing so.

Understanding Diabetes as a disease: Diabetes is a multifactorial disease (more than one factor is responsible for the development of Diabetes). Type I diabetes is inherited and is triggered by diet, lack of exercise and environmental factors. Type II is uncommon in children but it is also triggered by very poor diet.
Effects on your child: Children need great amount of energy as their bodies mature. Their blood glucose level may fluctuate leading to unexplained highs and lows. Diabetes may also lead to problems during puberty and irregular menstrual cycles.
Taking care of your child's diet: It's important to give your child a healthy balanced diet that is high in fibre and carbohydrates. Sweets are no longer off limits. Physical activity is important for children with diabetes, who should try to exercise every day.
Learning how to administer insulin injections. Insulin is usually injected into the skin over the abdomen or the thighs.
Make sure glucose is always available. Measure blood glucose levels and teach your child how to do this as soon as they are old enough.
See the doctor on a regular basis, and particularly if your child becomes ill for any reason - treatment is likely to need adjusting.

Managing Complications:
Hypoglycemic shock ( low blood sugar level) This occurs due to overdose of anti diabetic medicine. You may observe that your child is lethargic,
Effect on eyes and kidneys.
Effect on nerves .

Diabetes is not a dangerous disease. It can be controlled. Now is the time to bring change. Answers are now available to address the issues of affordability and accessibility. The means exist to strengthen healthcare systems and provide the necessary diabetes education of both the healthcare professionals and the families of those affected by diabetes. Help your child and gain as much information as you can from your doctor and build a safe future for your child.

Let me tell you about the symptoms of this diabetes is unlike any other health problem. It requires treatment on a daily basis, as well as knowledge on coping with specific situations. While life with diabetes can present itself as a challenge, it doesn’t have to run every aspect of your life. The goal of treating diabetes is to keep your blood sugar as close to normal as possible. Not too low (Called hypoglycemia) and not too high (Called hyperglycemia). This can be achieved by eating healthy, exercising, and utilizing insulin and medications to help control the sugar in your blood.
If you fail to properly treat your diabetes, it can lead to some fairly serious problems. Over time, high blood sugar can lead damage to blood vessels, kidneys, and other vital organs. Long term consequences can sometimes be severe, such as a stroke or heart attack. The most import thing for someone with diabetes to remember is to spend the time everyday to make sure that they’re staying healthy. It’s also important to turn to loved ones, family and friends to help cope when going through difficult times. With all of the technology available in the medical world today, having diabetes doesn’t have to be a death sentence like it was in the past. With the proper care and treatment, the majority of diabetics in todays world go on to lead happy and healthy lives.
I hope you all are understand .
