Through History: Tamil King Mamallan
To know the present it is often important to learn about the past history of any place. Often many aspects of present days depend on old legends that are just words of mouth. Some times, the rulers make a mark in the course of history uniquely
In olden days, Southern parts of India were ruled by the Pallava Dynasty. Narasimhavarman I was one of the most famous Pallava kings, succeeded by MahendravarmanII, Parameshwaravarman I, Narasimhavarman II (also called Rajasimha) and others.
Narasimhavarman I ruled Pallava Kingdom between 645 AD and 670 AD. He was an excellent strategist and a good wrestler and was also known as Mamallan. He defeated the Chalukya king, Pulakesin and established the dominance of Pallava Empire in the South.
Other than being an administrator for his people, the king was also artistic in nature. He gave special attention to the art work of sculptures and initiated building numerous temples, especially in the beach town of Mahabalipuram, which still boasts of the excellent tastes of the king. Mahabalipuram was a sea port during the rule of Pallava dynasty. While builing the town of Mahabalipuram, the king ordered different art forms of scultptures like open air bases, structured temples, man-made caves and rathas.
In the present day, the present generation feels proud of being part of this great culture as every victory is for them to see cut on rocks. The great king was also a great historian who wrote the proud history on rocks to stay for eternity.
