Motherly
Feeling stressed? Just call up your mom and have a chat with her. Scientists claim that hearing Mother's voice can work wonders to the nerves.
In a recent study, children were given an assignment to carry out an onstage performance and then take a test, both of which increased the stress levels in the children. And a group was consoled by their mothers; a second group talked to their mothers over phone and a third group was made to watch a movie. The first group and the second group were found to be equally affected positively by the presence and voice of their mothers while the third group was still stressed out after the procedure.
Being under stress increases a hormone called cortisol in the blood stream. The level of this hormone indicates the stress level a person is having. If under high levels of stress, the levels of cortisol would be very high in the body, which will have harmful affects on metabolism.
On the other hand, the love hormone, oxytocin is released in the blood stream when we feel loved and cared for. Getting a hug from your mother will make the oxytocin levels soar, making you feel great. The study has found that distance does not affect the secretion of oxytocin; you can feel the warmth of mothers' love just by hearing her voice over phone.
The studies show that mother's voice is almost as powerful a medicine as a bear hug from her to fight the ill-effects of stress.
