Default Social Responsibilities of Companies: The Hewlett –Packard way

Often major Corporates take an extra step to help the underprivileged people and give them a hand to overcome their burdens. This fulfills the social responsibility of the company of helping the society to attain a better way of life. Let us see the example of Hewlett-Packard which has taken a step to help the poor people of a village in India.

Kuppam a rural village, located at a distance of 105 kilo meters from Bangalore, has a population of about 285,000 people. Hewlett Packard has formed a special community with the village of Kuppam to give access to better social and economic opportunities to underprivileged people. This community strives to build a bridge to the technology deprived and technology excluded people.

With more than half the population under poverty line, kuppam is a village which needs this extra boost to become a thriving and self-sustaining economy. The community tries to improve the lives of the villagers through technology by raise in the rates of literacy, creating new income sources, providing better access to Government services, better education and healthcare.

The company through this initiative is fulfilling its social responsibilities and also creating a new market that will drive growth in revenue and profit. The most important factors that are given extra attention are health services, education to children and women, social empowerment of all classes in the society, economic development of the whole village and improvement in the relationship with the government.
