Cats are said to have nine lives. This myth must have originated due to the agility, flexibility and swiftness exhibited by cats in escaping dangers. Also, a cat always falls on its four feet, due to an automatic twisting reflex of its body.

Cats are the most popular pets around the world. There can be nothing more charming than a cute kitten chasing a ball of wool. With an average life expectancy of 12 to 14 years, cats are mainly loved by the owners for the companionship they provide. Some people keep a cat for hunting household pests like Rodents. A pedigreed cat has its ancestry is formally registered and there cat shows are organized for such costly animals.

Cats have been domesticated for at least 9,500 years. But they have not adapted their behavior to human domestication, unlike dogs. A cat remains a cat in all environments and a domestic cat can adapt easily to a wild life if need arises.

Cats have excellent eye-sight and hearing which makes them an expert hunter. Cats have protractible claws which can be extended voluntarily. The favorite pastime of a cat is to sleep. They conserve their energy by sleeping an average of 13–14 hours daily. Cats are highly territorial animals and they may even view their owners as their territory.

It must be of interest to know that cats purr and whine in the same frequency of a newborn human baby's cry. This causes the owner to involuntarily feel a need to attend to the cat.
