Vishu: A New Year Begins Here
Vishu is the festival that celebrates New Year in the state of Kerala of South India Usually it is celebrated on 14th of April which falls on the first day of the astrological month of 'Medam'. Vishu is of profound importance to the culture of Kerala.
The major events of Vishu are Vishukkani (the first thing seen on the day), Puthukodi (wearing new cloths) and Vishu kaineetam.
Vishukkani is the first thing everyone sees on a Vishu day. The previous day, various items are arranged auspiciously to form the Vishukkani. The main articles include raw rice, lemon, golden cucumber, metal mirror, betel leaves and most importantly, the yellow flowers of konna (Scientific name Cassia fistula) arranged along side a lighted lamp. All these items are believed to bring luck, harmony and abundance of food, light, money and knowledge in the New Year.
Vishu kaineetam means tokens of money gifted by elders of the family to other family members. This denotes sharing of prosperity with all and wishing happiness and luck to everyone.
Another important aspect of Vishu is the bursting of fire crackers. Fire crackers are burst on the eve and dawn of Vishu to celebrate the New Year and to ward off ill luck.
On the day of Vishu, every member of the family is treated to a mouth watering vegetarian Dinner, complete with a delicious dessert of payasam. The most mandatory item on the menu is Vishu Kanji which is porridge made of rice, coconut milk and spices.
